Teen Road Test

What?

DMV has allowed commercial driving schools to administer road tests to teens. In order to administer the road test, driver education teachers were required to go through the certification process and become licensed as an official examiner. Choppy's Driving Academy completed the certification process to administer the road exam. There are pros and cons for the families in regards to the road test being offered at a driving school. The pros would be the availability and flexibility of the driving school to offer road tests. We have the ability to administer the road test 7 days a week (weather permitting) which creates flexibility in scheduling.  The only restriction is we can not start before legal sunrise and must be finished by legal sunset. Part of the process is we have to schedule the road test well in advance as we must give DMV a 24 hour notice we are doing a road test.  The cons would be the fact that the family is still  required to make a trip to DMV to get the paperwork completed once the road test is passed at the driving school. So either way, a trip to DMV has to be made and currently there is no process in place to get the new drivers in and out in a timely manner while at the DMV.

More

If you were to come to Choppy's (or any other driving school) for the road test, we would check to make sure your child has had his / her  permit for 9 months, complete the required paperwork on our end,  take the test and if they pass, they would be able to go to DMV for processing. At DMV, they would check the driving log for 60 hours of driving, the driving record, ensure the driver has insurance (Form DL123), take the picture for the drivers license etc. So in other words, the trip to the DMV would still be the same, minus the driving test. We do charge a fee for the road test and you would also have to pay the fees at the DMV.
