Become a confident and safe driver!
Choppy’s Driving Academy is a Christ-centered DMV certified driving school serving Pender, Duplin, Sampson and all surrounding counties. Our goal is to provide the best instruction possible in a fun, friendly, and wholesome environment.
Our courses in driver education are certified and governed through the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles and designed to teach North Carolina laws, rules and regulations. Behind the wheel training for each student is also a very important aspect of the drivers education course. Here, students learn basic car handling procedures while driving in real life scenarios across various driving situations. We focus on educating our drivers to become responsible drivers and how their decisions impact not only themselves and the passengers in their car but other drivers and pedestrians around them.
In today’s world, teens are faced with more distractions now more than ever. The accessibility of things such as cell phones and other electronic devices greatly impact not only teen drivers but more seasoned drivers as well. Students will learn the dangers of and how to deal with distracted driving. Students will be taught how to identify potential hazards and conflicts they will encounter during everyday driving. Once they are able to identify these hazards, they will develop the ability of how to predict ways the hazard may impact them and the decision(s) they will make to avoid the potential hazards. Once this decision is made, an emphasis will be made on how to execute in car maneuvers in an attempt to avoid the identified hazards. The goal is to provide each student with strategies to become a defensive driver so they can travel in low risk situations and avoid potential collisions.
Not only do students have more distractions in today’s world but they are exposed to more impairing substances as well. We provide students with drug and alcohol information that teaches students how these substances impact their body and in turn has a negative impact on their driving abilities. Students learn short and long term effects of drug and alcohol use. They learn laws governing substance abuse and operating a motor vehicle while impaired.
North Carolina requires all individuals under the age of 18 who want to obtain a drivers license to take a driver’s education course consisting of 30 hours classroom and 6 hours behind the wheel instruction with a certified instructor. Students must be 14 ½ years old on the first day of class to be eligible to take driver’s education. They can register for class before they are 14 ½ but must be 14 ½ by the first day of class. It is the parent / guardian's responsibility to ensure their child is of the proper age before they register. Any student over the age of 18 must possess a valid NC driving permit in order to take the class as well.
At Choppy’s Driving Academy, we strive to accommodate the majority of students and make it as convenient as possible. During the school year, we offer after school classes which will run from 4:00 - 7:00 each day for a total of 10 days. Other times such as Christmas break, spring break and summer break, there will be classes that run for 5 consecutive days from 8:00am - 2:00pm each day. Saturday classes will also be offered throughout the year which will be held for 5 Saturdays from 8:00-2:00 each day.
